Origanum vulgare As popular as oregano is today it is hard to remember that it was virtually unknown in American cuisine before the soldiers returned home from the Italian theater of World War II. Sometimes called wild marjoram, oregano belongs to the mint family and is related to both marjoram, savory and thyme. Because it is more pungent and aromatic, it has to be used with more care than marjoram. Fresh Mediterranean oregano is sometimes available in supermarkets. This is the dried variety. There is a Mexican variety that is much stronger and typically used in highly spiced dishes. In fact it is not in the Origanum family. See Mexican Oregano. We also carry this variety in multiple forms.
