Onion Pieces
A pantry staple with plenty of flavor! Dried onion pieces bring savory onion taste and a gentle sweetness to your cooking. They soften as they absorb moisture, adding both flavor and texture.
Uses
Stir into soups, stews, chili, sauces, and rice dishes. They also work well in stuffing, meatloaf, and casseroles. Add directly to dishes with plenty of cooking liquid, or soak in warm water until softened and drain before mixing into drier recipes.
From the Colonel
In most kitchens of the world, the onion is considered almost a staple. Thought to have originated in central Asia, it is now grown worldwide. It’s a key ingredient in mirepoix—a mixture of diced onions, carrots, and celery used to season sauces, soups, and stews.
Two Quick Recipes
Quick Onion Gravy
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a saucepan. Whisk in 2 tablespoons flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 1½ cups broth, then add 1 tablespoon onion pieces and ¼ teaspoon dried thyme. Simmer gently for 8–10 minutes, stirring until thickened and the onions are softened. Season with salt and pepper.
Buttery Onion Couscous
Bring 1¼ cups broth, 1 tablespoon onion pieces, and 1 tablespoon butter to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes. Stir in 1 cup instant couscous and ½ teaspoon dried parsley. Remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff and season to taste.
