Mentha × piperita Peppermint is a highly aromatic, perennial plant that may grow as tall as 3 feet. Originating from a cross between spearmint and water mint, peppermint was known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans as both a flavoring for food and as a medicine. It was first cultivated commercially in England around 1750. Now growing wild in much of the world, it is similar in appearance to other mints, with dark green leaves and white flowers. Unlike most other mints, though, peppermint often has square dark green or purplish stems. The stems and leaves of peppermint are cut before the plants flower. It is used in many recipes. It can be found in baking, as well as, candy making. It is difficult to get through a day without coming into contact with something that uses peppermint.
